The leader of the group of governors from the North, Inuwa Yahaya, stated that they are worried about the high levels of insecurity in the North.
He also mentioned that the northern governors called for a different way to handle the insecurity in the region.
Yahaya, the governor of Gombe State, shared this after a private meeting with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Service Chiefs led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa.
Reportedly, the governors at the meeting included Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Babagana Zulum of Borno, Radda Dikko of Katsina, and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, among others.
Yahaya mentioned that the purpose of the meeting was to talk about and reconsider the strategies for dealing with insecurity in the region.
He explained, “The reason for the meeting, as you can see, is between the governors and the service chiefs and the NSA.
So, it concerns security and you know security is very important, especially because of the recent cases of kidnapping in the Northwest. We are becoming increasingly worried and feel the need to talk about, review, and maybe consider different options to what we have been doing before, so that we can get better results”.
He emphasized the need for non-violent and violent approaches to address the underlying causes of insecurity.
“Actually, that is the best way to go because the issue is that until we combine the violent and non-violent approaches, and already the service chiefs and all other security agencies have been doing their best.
So what we need to do is to change the method, especially by including the non-violent approach, so that in the end when we combine the two, we will have a better security situation in the country,” he said.
In the recent incidents of insecurity in the Northern parts of the country, about 200 women and children who had left the Internally Displaced Persons camps to collect firewood in Ngala, Borno State, were kidnapped on March 6.
On March 7, bandits kidnapped 287 students from the LEA Primary and Junior Secondary School, Kuriga in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Also, on Saturday, bandits kidnapped at least 15 Tsangaya students in the Gidan Bakuso area of Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
