Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, on Thursday, convicted and sentenced a man, Nurudeen Nasiru, to life imprisonment for showing his neighbor's 13-year-old daughter explicit material and sexually abusing her.
During the trial, the State Counsel, Mr Olusola Soneye, presented three witnesses: a social worker, the survivor, and her father, while the convict testified as the sole witness.
The prosecution submitted the confessing statement of the convict as evidence.
The prosecutor stated that the convict committed the offenses on February 23, 2021, at about 3.45pm on Aminu Street, Alapere, Ketu, Lagos.
Justice Soladoye, in her ruling, determined that the convict sexually abused the survivor anally and also exposed her to explicit material.
She also found that the prosecution was able to substantiate beyond doubt the two charges of defilement and indecent treatment of a child against the convict.
Justice Soladoye stated, “Nasiru was a neighbor who would enter the room of the survivor and display explicit videos on his phone to her, then coerce her to imitate what he had shown her on his phone.
“Nasiru, in his confessing statement, confessed to having engaged in sexual intercourse with the survivor.
The judge further ruled that the elements of the offense of sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child were thoroughly proven under Sections 261 and 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
She, therefore, convicted Nasiru of the two charges brought against him.
“On count one of sexual assault by penetration, Nasiru is sentenced to life imprisonment.
“On count two of indecent treatment of a child, Nasiru is sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.
“The sentence should run concurrently, and his name is to be included in the Sexual Offenders’ Register maintained by the Lagos State Government.
