A 60-year-old man named Bamidele Haruna was brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for supposedly showing a fake National Identification Number while acting as a guarantor in a case at the Federal High Court.
The accused is being charged with three offenses related to conspiracy, forgery, lying under oath, and pretending to be someone else, as brought against him by the police.
The prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, informed the court that Haruna and others, who are currently not apprehended, conspired and committed the crimes on March 5, 2023.
Osuji stated that the act took place during working hours at the Federal High Court Lagos division in Ikoyi.
He claimed that the defendant acquired and presented a Deed of Indenture to the Federal High Court for verification when he appeared as a guarantor.
The prosecutor also mentioned that Haruna had made a false statement about his financial status using the name Bamidele Fagbamila in an affidavit and also used the same name in the National Identity Management System, which he knew was untrue.
According to the prosecutor, these offenses violate Sections 411, 365 (1) (a), (b), and 85 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Nevertheless, Haruna admitted guilt to the charges against him.
As a result, Magistrate Oluwatosin Erinle postponed the case until March 19, 2024, for the presentation of evidence and sentencing.
