Nigerian artist Simisola Kosoko, also known as Simi, has criticized those who criticize her voice and music style, saying her voice is very unique.
Simi made this statement on Thursday in response to critics' comments on her voice and music style.
She clarified that although her voice is unique, it is also lovely, gentle, and can be strong.
She mentioned that her voice stands out and doesn't blend into the music like most voices do.
She stated that the distinctiveness of her voice is why many fans prefer her collaborations with other artists.
She expressed, “I understand that some of you may struggle to understand, so let me explain. My voice is extremely unique. It's noticeable. It's lovely and gentle, but it can also be strong and noticeable. It doesn't blend into the music like most voices do. So regardless of the style or speed of the music I'm singing, the first thing you'll notice is my voice.
“Not the music. This is what most people love the most about me – the noticeable quality of my voice. So they love everything I sing. Some people love my songs more than my voice, because let’s face it, I’m a fantastic songwriter…but for them, my voice is too strong at times and gets in the way. For some, because of how my voice stands out, it sounds like they’re hearing the same kind of music – even when they’re listening to me sing 5 different genres back to back.
“That’s why my collaborations work for many of you (you probably didn’t even know that). The contrast of someone else’s voice can distract you, and then when you hear my voice again, you have the space to appreciate it. I know my voice. It is my superpower, but that power has its consequences. I accept it.
“However, I cannot change my voice. Even if I could, I wouldn't want to. This is why I ask that you take what you can, when you can and move on – but do not insult me or all the hard work I do. Stop that! I’m very skilled at what I do for these ignorant criticisms. So get your act together and do better.
“I love love love my fans. I prioritize them. When everyone else tunes in for the things they like, I appreciate them too. But please don't be insensitive and insult me 🙏🏾”
