The City of Vancouver will receive a lasting sign displaying its name for people who want to take pictures of themselves and for tourists.
City council unanimously approved the idea on Wednesday.
This decision follows the success of a temporary illuminated “Vancouver” sign located between Canada Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre, which was very popular with both visitors and residents.
The Vancouver Hotel Destination Association, along with the Port of Vancouver and the convention centre, installed that sign. However, it was initially intended to only be in place for the winter.
Vancouver Coun. Peter Meiszner, who proposed the permanent sign, stated that it aligns with the city’s reputation as a tourist destination and its upcoming role as the host city for the 2024 Grey Cup, 2025 Invictus Game, and 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The motion passed on Wednesday instructs city staff to return with suggestions on where to place the sign, how to fund it, and what the design should be for a “high-profile permanent public outdoor Vancouver sign” by this autumn.
