The Haldimand OPP detachment is conducting an inquiry into a complaint of animal cruelty that led to the death of an emu in Fisherville, Ont.
According to the police, two individuals unlawfully entered a closed animal pen, resulting in an emu being hurt in an unidentified way, and the emu has since passed away.
The police are examining surveillance footage with the aim of identifying the two suspects, they announced.
The incident was reported shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, but investigators have established that it occurred between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. that day.
Law enforcement states that the two suspects caused damage to a fence at the Haldimand Road 20 property in Fisherville in order to gain access to a closed animal pen.
After the emu was fatally injured, the two suspects fled, according to the police.
When questioned about whether the emu was purposely injured and why the case was being looked into as potential animal cruelty rather than a break and enter, Const. Patti Cote stated that “while I don’t want to speculate about the reason for the individuals’ actions, they were observed on surveillance entering directly into the animal pen upon arrival to the property.”
She also mentioned that further surveillance footage is under review and the investigation is ongoing. The police are asking anyone with information to reach out to the Haldimand OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
