The House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday to stop the social media app TikTok from being used by Americans unless its owner, the Chinese company ByteDance Ltd., sells it.
The House claimed that the app is a security risk, and because it has over 150 million U.S. users, they voted 352-65 to force TikTok to either sell part of its ownership or be banned.
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers stated, "We have given TikTok a clear choice: operate separately from its Chinese parent company ByteDance, or face the consequences of being associated with the Chinese Communist Party."
After learning that their favorite app might be banned, some social media users expressed frustration, while others made jokes.
Some people pointed out various issues they believe the U.S. government should solve instead of trying to ban a social media platform.
Regardless of whether people support or oppose the ban, they are sharing their views online, including politicians.
