The House of Representatives has instructed the Transmission Company of Nigeria to quickly bring back electricity in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.
The House decided to do this after agreeing to a motion called “Call to resuscitate the power transmission sub-station in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, put forward by Obuku Oforji, a member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, Bayelsa State.
During the discussion in the House on Wednesday, Oforji mentioned that on September 23, 2023, the 132/33KV transmission sub-station serving Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital and its surrounding areas got destroyed by fire, causing Yenagoa to be completely without power. He said that the State has been struggling to use only one feeder to supply five feeders.
He also mentioned that the existing feeder is becoming weak, and if quick action is not taken, it will collapse.
Aware that the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company has been taking action to prevent the weak feeder from collapsing, the House, with Speaker Abbas Tajudeen presiding, urged TCN to quickly get involved “To prevent the complete collapse of power distribution and transmission in Yenagoa.”
The House also instructed the Committee on Power to make sure this is done.
