An Ondo State Magistrate Court in Akure has decided to keep a 24-year-old man, Peter Adebayo, in custody for supposedly causing his friend's death with a 3kg cooking gas cylinder.
Adebayo got arrested by the state police for the act at Ireakari Street, Akure, and was later taken to court.
Adebayo appeared in court facing a single charge of murder.
During the arraignment, the prosecutor, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, informed the court that the defendant struck the victim, Lekan Raji, on the head with the cylinder, causing his death.
The charge against the defendant stated that on February 23, 2024, at about 9.00 pm at Ire Akari Street, Akure, the accused unlawfully hit Lekan Raji with a 3kg gas cylinder on his head, resulting in his death.
According to the prosecutor, the offence violates Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. 1 of Ondo State 2006.
However, the defendant did not enter a plea.
Oniyere requested that the defendant be kept at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, Akure, until advice is received from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The defense counsel, C.O Falana, asked for an adjournment to prepare a response to the application.
In his ruling, the magistrate, T. O. Olusola-Olujobi ordered the detention of the defendant at the correctional centre and set the case for March 19, 2024, for further proceedings.
