New Brunswick’s seniors advocate says the province will need to reconsider its long-term care services to meet the needs of a more diverse population.
Kelly Lamrock believes the government should involve First Nations and other groups, such as the LGBTQ community, to ensure their inclusion in the province’s care homes.
He suggests, in a report published today, that the provincial Social Development Department collaborate with the New Brunswick Multicultural Association to create a profile of future long-term care users, considering cultural attitudes and the requirements of growing immigrant communities.
The 198-page report emphasizes that urgent action is necessary for the province’s long-term care system to instill confidence in New Brunswickers.
Lamrock points out that residents in long-term care homes lack independence and may be overlooked due to an overwhelmed system.
He stresses that the long-term care sector “desperately” needs more inspectors, spot inspections, and improved training at all levels.
