The Kano State Hisbah Board reported that it caught 11 Muslims for breaking the Ramadan fast rule by eating when they shouldn't.
The board's Public Relations Officer, Lawal Ibrahim, stated that the arrests happened during the yearly Ramadan enforcement operations, which involved checking eateries and markets.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, the Hisbah spokesperson mentioned, "We arrested 10 men and a woman for eating during fasting hours, including a woman who was caught eating from her groundnut-selling stall."
Ibrahim clarified that non-Muslims were not targeted by these activities, but if they were found selling food to Muslims during fasting hours, they could be detained.
"We caught 11 people on Tuesday, including a woman selling groundnuts who was seen eating from her wares after being reported. The other 10 were men arrested around the city, particularly near busy markets," Ibrahim added.
"We don't arrest non-Muslims because this doesn't concern them, and they would only be guilty if we find out they are cooking food to sell to fasting Muslims."
The month-long Ramadan fast started on Monday following an announcement by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaja Sa’ad Abubakar, on Sunday.
On the other hand, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara State has donated food and clothing to 10,000 orphans for Ramadan and Sallah celebrations.
Representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Yari kicked off the distribution of the items to the beneficiaries in Gusau.
The senator, represented by the former Chairman of the All Progressive Congress in the state, Alhaji Lawal Liman, stated that the gesture was to help orphans during Ramadan and for Eid celebrations.
Yari explained, "It’s important to help the needy during the holy months of Ramadan because it's what Prophet Muhammad SAW taught."
Similarly, former Kwara State governor and ex-Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, began giving out food items to Muslim faithful and others in Kwara.
According to a statement by his Press Officer on Local Matters, Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, the food distribution is part of Saraki’s yearly tradition and aims to ensure that everyone can observe the Ramadan fast with ease.
"I am very happy to be with you all during this time of piety and supplication, to pray and observe Iftar as directed by Prophet Mohammed (SAW)."
"I value your presence and support and urge you to spend the fasting period praying for a positive change in our nation's fortune.
"Let's continue to show love, unite, and work together to improve our country," Sakaki said, as per the statement.
