A bill that wants to create the National Institute of Construction Institute in Itele, Ogun State, has been approved for further consideration by the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
Named “A bill for an act to establish the National Institute of Construction Technology and Management, Itele, Ogun State and for Related Matters”, it aims to set up a legal framework for the institute's establishment and management.
Proposed by Joseph Adegbesan, the member representing Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency, Ogun State, the bill aims to provide facilities and promote research for Nigeria’s progress in construction, technology and management, among other areas.
During the discussion on the basic principles of the bill, Adegbesan highlighted that the legislation is a response to the need to “Offer courses and provide full-time education and training in Construction Technology, Engineering Technology, Applied Sciences, Management Sciences and other fields of study for the people of Itele, Ogun State and for Nigerians in general.”
The lawmaker from the All Progressives Congress also mentioned that once established, the institute would enhance the technological abilities of Nigerians, and it would adhere to international best practices.
Consisting of seven parts divided into 25 sections, the proposed legislation includes provisions for establishment, functions and powers of the institute and its governing council, institute staff, discipline of staff and students, among other aspects.
Adegbesan also argued in favor of the technology institute, stating, “This move aims to provide technical expertise in the field of construction, engineering, and management to improve our technological workforce.”
