A federal judge on Tuesday approved the $92 million bond put up by former President Donald Trump. Donald Trump writer E. Jean Carroll Donald Trump will pay Carroll if the jury award survives appeals.
Judge Lewis A. Kaplan officially approved the bond on Tuesday, following agreement from lawyers that there was no dispute over it.
The bond was offered by the Republican 2024 presidential frontrunner after Trump’s lawyers announced they were appealing the verdict to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan.
During a campaign rally over the weekend, Trump resumed his attacks on E. Jean Carroll, accusing her of falsely accusing him of raping her in 1996.
A lawyer for Carroll warned of the possibility of a third defamation lawsuit if Trump continued his verbal attacks.
Following the $83.3 million January defamation award, Trump had almost completely stopped his public attacks on Carroll.
A jury concluded that Trump defamed Carroll in 2022 and sexually abused her in 1996, but also found that he had not raped her according to how rape was defined in New York state.
Trump did not attend the May trial but was present for most of the January trial, expressing dissatisfaction even when jurors were present.
Carroll first made her claims public against Trump in a 2019 memoir.
Donald Trump, 77, is also facing a $454 million civil fraud penalty and four criminal cases.
