The Okanagan College women's basketball team is heading to nationals for the second time in three years, but they need financial help to make it happen.
The OC Coyotes hosted the best teams in B.C. at the provincial tournament this year. Despite being ranked last at 6th place, they pulled off a surprising win.
Head coach Andrew Gini said they were underdogs at the provincials, with an upset in the first game and a surprise win against the Capilano team in the semis. This led them to the finals and secured their spot at nationals in Lloydminster, Alberta.
The Coyotes won the finals in front of their home fans, earning a place at nationals in Lloydminster, Alberta.
Head coach Gini mentioned that their five seniors played a big part in the win, bringing experience and knowledge to the team.
Soleil Wilding, a senior player with five seasons under her belt, is looking forward to the trip to Lloydminster and hopes to end her playing career with a final title.
Coyotes player Soleil Wilding expressed excitement and belief in the team's ability to win, fueled by their recent thrilling wins.
The team is excited to play more games.
However, sending the team to the national stage is expensive.
Gini mentioned that it will cost $25,000 to $30,000, which is a significant amount, especially since they had to do the same thing a couple of years ago.
The team has set up a GoFundMe page and hopes for last-minute donations.
The players and staff will fly out on Monday, and the tournament starts on Wednesday. If you would like to contribute, or find out more about the Coyotes, click here.
