A middle-aged man known as Onuora, is currently in police custody at the Inland Town Police Division in Onitsha, for allegedly attacking a schoolgirl in the Onitsha area of Anambra State.
It was reported that the suspect was apprehended at the Ado Girls Secondary School, Onitsha by security officers, who have been following him.
A police source informed our correspondent that the suspect had a habit of setting traps around the school, waiting for his victim.
Following the suspect's arrest, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has requested the suspect to be kept in custody.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chumthe a-Udeh, revealed in a statement on Sunday, that the governor specifically demanded for the suspected rapist to be held at the State Criminal Investigation Department Awka, while the investigation into the alleged rape case continues.
“Meanwhile, the suspect has been arrested and detained at the Inland Town Police Division Onitsha.
“Governor Soludo, who disapproved of such a terrible and wicked act of targeting the innocent, pledged to use every legal means available to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice in the hope that this will discourage others.
“The governor urged the Ndi Anambra to speak out in the face of such appalling acts,” the commissioner added.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, for further details, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls and several messages on his telephone.
Remember that the Anambra State Police command had a few months ago detained no fewer than 11 suspects in various cases of rape and defilement.
Ikenga, who revealed this in a statement, said the suspects were arrested in different areas of the state within the week.
He also stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, instructed that all the suspects implicated in the course of the investigation be brought to court without delay once the investigation is completed.
