Some of the top actors and directors in Hollywood will receive a special treat exclusively made in Quebec to make their Oscar victories sweeter or to soften the blow of any losses.
Sagar, a high-quality, light sugar made from maple sap in Quebec, is one of the many luxurious gifts that top acting and directing nominees will get from Los Angeles marketing agency Distinctive Assets.
Although not officially connected to the awards ceremony, the company’s extravagant “Everyone Wins” gift bags have become an annual point of interest during the festivities, generating media attention and numerous tabloid reviews. In a news release in February, Distinctive Assets hinted at the bags’ value reaching six figures in U.S. dollars. Oscars The founder of the agency, Lash Fary, is responsible for selecting the gifts and recipients for the coveted packages, and he proudly shares this on social media.
This year, the Sagar Experience from Quebec maple producer Érablière F. Carrier caught his attention. Now, celebrities like Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, and Mark Ruffalo are set to receive a sample of the product valued at around C$1,300, according to Samuel Busque of Orion Suppliers, the company behind the Sagar Experience marketing campaign.
He explained that the idea behind the sugar was to create a luxurious item with international appeal rooted in Quebec's history and tradition.
“We still find that in Quebec we don’t use enough of our uniqueness and our products to demonstrate to the rest of the world how exceptional we are and what kind of luxury items we can offer,” Busque explained in an interview.
The Sagar Experience isn’t the type of sugar that Carey Mulligan or Ryan Gosling would simply stir into their morning coffee. Busque described it as a distinctive dish in itself with a cotton-like texture and a subtle hint of maple. He assured that it truly is a “complete experience.”
The product is also the focus of chef-led workshops for guests at Quebec City’s Fairmont Château Frontenac hotel this month. Additionally, an online store for the Sagar Experience is being developed and will feature items similar in price to the celebrity samples as well as even more expensive packages with accessories like hand-painted wooden boxes.
For now, however, Francis Carrier, the owner of Érablière F. Carrier, is simply proud that his product from Quebec’s rural Beauce region has reached Hollywood.

“It’s incredible,” he mentioned in a phone interview on Saturday. “It’s the best start we could have for our marketing strategy for our product, which is truly extraordinary compared to all the other maple products out there. We’re extremely proud to be at the Oscars for that reason.
