German FA (DFB) managing director Andreas Rettig stated on Saturday that there has been no communication with Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp regarding assuming the role of the national team.
Rettig, in an interview with German magazine Focus, mentioned that the DFB was aiming to honor Klopp’s desire for a break after his time at Liverpool concludes in the summer.
“There has been no contact. He has decided to take a break. I don’t know if we should be offering him travel tips on how to enjoy his free time,” he said.
With the current Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s contract extending until the conclusion of Euro 2024, which will take place in Germany, the DFB has been searching for a long-term replacement – with Klopp being the top candidate.
Rettig explained, “He wants a break and that’s why it's not a consideration.”
In January, Klopp surprised the football world by announcing his upcoming departure as Liverpool boss at the end of the ongoing season, citing exhaustion.
Although he has been linked to various positions, including the German national team, Klopp has consistently stated that he intends to take a year off before returning to coaching.
The host team has faced challenges in the lead-up to the Euros, resulting in the dismissal of Hansi Flick, the first Germany coach to be relieved of duties in the federation’s history.
In 2023, Germany only won three out of 11 matches, including just one out of four under Nagelsmann's leadership.
Rettig expressed that the DFB supports Nagelsmann’s team to deliver a strong performance in the summer and hopes that he will continue after a successful tournament.
“You don’t dismiss a successful coach.”
Late January 2024, Liverpool announced that Klopp would step down at the end of the season.
