President Joe Biden’s speech on Thursday night State of the Union address has garnered a lot of attention from news outlets and hosts, such as Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld. The conservative satirist seized on a particular moment, starting his coverage by rhyming, “Biden seemed weak, but at least he said ‘illegal.’ And so Democrats boo, because Biden said something true.”
He then showed a clip from the speech where Biden was interrupted by far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene, who demanded that Biden address the murder of Laken Riley. Taylor-Greene shouted, “Say her name!”
Biden seemed to pronounce Riley’s name as “Lincoln” while holding up a button handed to him by Taylor-Greene. He stated, “An innocent young woman who was killed,” as Taylor-Greene shouted, “By an illegal!”
“By an illegal,” Biden repeated. “That’s correct. But how many of thousands of people are being killed by legal citizens? To her parents, I say: My heart goes out to you. Having lost children myself, I understand.”
The unexpected moment was different from the wording usually used by Democrats and liberals/progressives when referring to undocumented people in the United States.
“Did you catch any of that?” Gutfeld laughed, imitating Biden’s pronunciation and making a mistake. “First, Joe called Laken Riley, the murdered nursing student, ‘Lincoln’ Riley. ‘Lincoln’ Riley. I mean, I don’t blame him — it’s probably the first time he even heard of the poor girl.”
“And I give him points for trying. The bar is so low for Joe, I’m grateful he didn’t call her Charles Nelson Reilly,” Gutfeld continued, mentioning the famous ’70s game show regular. “But were the media, the libs, upset about that? No, that would mean they actually have a heart. What was worse than mispronouncing the victim’s name was misidentifying her brutal attacker, her brutal killer.”
Gutfeld then showed a clip of Nancy Pelosi stating, “He should have said ‘undocumented.’ It’s not a big thing, OK?” She told CNN’s Dana Bash, “We usually say ‘undocumented,’ he said ‘illegal.'”
“Think about that,” Gutfeld added. “The main point for a CNN anchor, Dana Bash, is the word used for a murderer, not the President’s lack of knowledge and indifference towards the victim. The feelings of murderers matter more than their victims or their families.”
Gutfeld continued to criticize trans women, saying, “But keep in mind, these are the same people who criticize anyone who misgenders murderous men who claim to be women. We must conform to their unreasonable demands even if they don’t follow the laws of humanity.”
He cited the New York Times’ coverage of the incident, which said, “Mr. Biden’s use of the term sparked instant backlash from liberal Democrats and immigration advocates, who accused the president of dehumanizing undocumented migrants by emphasizing the killing and using the term ‘illegal.'”
“So Biden inadvertently spoke the truth and referred to an illegal immigrant as ‘an illegal,’ and the media seized on it,” Gutfeld commented.
Riley, 22, was a nursing student from Georgia who was killed while out for a run on Feb. 22. Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old man from Venezuela, has been accused of her murder. Officials have stated that Ibarra came into the U.S. unlawfully in 2022 and has been in the country since. Ibarra, who had no known connection to Riley before the attack, has been accused of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another.
