No less than five individuals lost their lives and many others were hurt in a serious road collision on the Benin-Ore-Shagamu Expressway in the Akinfosile area of Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State on Saturday evening.
As indicated by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the crash included a Toyota Hiace bus with the plate number FKG 405 FX from Akure en route to Lagos.
The bus reportedly veered off the expressway, flipped several times, and landed in the vegetation.
The PPRO mentioned, “The police have taken the injured to the nearest hospital, while the deceased have been transported to the same hospital's mortuary.
“An investigation is underway to uncover the cause of the accident, and efforts are being made to reach the families of the passengers involved.
“She urged the public to contact their relatives who departed for Lagos from Akure on Saturday to verify their condition, and those uncertain of their families' whereabouts should contact the police at Igbotako Division.”
Similarly, the state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Ezekiel Son’Allah, also confirmed the incident, stating that 13 people were involved in the accident.
He stated, “The total number involved is 13, including six females and seven males. Five of them died, and eight were injured. The accident was caused by exceeding the speed limit.
“The FRSC commander also urged drivers to always be mindful of excessive speed and to be cautious at all times.”
