Canadian star Alphonso Davies’ first time starting a game since his knee injury was cut short after only 14 minutes. This happened on Saturday during Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against Mainz when he got kicked in the face.
Davies got hit in the face by Silvan Widmer’s boot as they both went for a high ball near the midfield. Even though Widmer's boot came up due to losing balance, there was no foul called.
After receiving treatment on the field, Davies went straight to the locker room, and Raphael Guerreiro took his place.
The 23-year-old left back from Edmonton had injured a knee ligament during Bayern’s 3-1 home win against Borussia Moenchengladbach on Feb. 3. Before Saturday, he had only made two substitute appearances.
There is no immediate information about how serious this latest injury is, but it's not the first time Davies has been hit in the head by a boot. In October 2022, he suffered a “cranial bruise” in a 2-2 draw at Borussia Dortmund.
He was back in action a week later.
Davies has 44 caps for Canada, and the team will play Trinidad and Tobago on March 23 in Frisco, Texas for a Copa America qualifying playoff.
