The AP has predicted that Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Republican Steve Garvey have moved forward to the main election in the California Senate competition.
Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff of Los Angeles, who headed the initial impeachment investigation of former President Donald Trump, will compete against Republican Steve Garvey, a former Los Angeles Dodgers player, in a main election runoff to determine who will represent California in the U.S. Senate, according to a race call by The Associated Press.
Schiff and the former first baseman Garvey succeeded in surpassing Orange County Congresswoman Katie Porter and Oakland Congresswoman Barbara Lee, both Democrats, and secured the top two positions.
Rep. Schiff ran ads supporting Garvey because he was trying to avoid a main election race against a fellow Democrat like Rep. Barbara Lee or Rep. Katie Porter. Polling indicates that Schiff will begin the race against Garvey with at least a 15-point lead.
Schiff was always going to be challenging for Porter to defeat, because of his national presence, and endorsements from Nancy Pelosi and other key Congressional leaders.
Adam Schiff appears poised to become the next senator from California.
