The FCTA plans to introduce a single standard transportation system in the capital city, as revealed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
The Director of Road Traffic Services for FCTA, Dr Abdulateef Bello, announced the plans at a meeting with stakeholders on Monday.
Bello also mentioned that the clearing of taxi ranks in the city will start soon, after earlier eviction notices were issued.
He shared that the standardization of the transportation system in Abuja has become necessary due to the city's rapid development, and every aspect of it should be addressed.
The director stated that Abuja needs an organized transportation system to serve all residents, and the administration has finalized plans with consultants to bring in buses using Compressed Natural Gas to improve mass transit in the city.
He explained that the new buses will be deployed on various routes to replace old vehicles and taxis that have been causing issues on the roads in Abuja.
Dr Abubakar Sadiq, chair of RTEIN Mass Transit, expressed support for the new policy and emphasized the importance of considering key players in the transportation sector.
On the other hand, Okorie Victor, Chair of the Self Employed Commercial Drivers Association, urged the FCTA to carry out extensive awareness campaigns to ensure that all stakeholders understand the administration's evolving transportation policies.
